Batman: The Caped Crusader, a new animated series from J.J. Abrams, Matt Reeves and Bruce Timm, looks to take heavy inspiration from the prolific television show Batman: The Animated Series.
Batman: The Animated Series, the second-best cartoon of all time as ranked by Fandom Wire, is one of the most prominent stories in Batman’s IP, taking the mythos of the Dark Knight and integrating it with a noir Gotham. It’s well known for capturing the essence of the character, as well as his rogues’ gallery — who ran rampant through the city until the series ended in 1995.
The show, which was spearheaded by Paul Dini, Bruce Timm, Eric Radomski and Allen Burnett, went on to develop a fully-established Dr. Freeze origin story and introduced the world to the lovable clown princess of crime, Harley Quinn — who has been in several blockbuster films such as Suicide Squad (2016), Birds of Prey: Harley Quinn (2020), and the newest installment of the DCEU (DC Entertainment Universe), The Suicide Squad (2021).
Not to mention, the show contrived the critically-acclaimed film, Batman: The Mask of the Phantasm, which has been named one of the greatest Batman stories of all time by Screencrush, Fandom and Screenrant.
The award-winning series helped the producing team devise the DC Animated Universe — a collection of DC animated shows consisting of a standalone Superman television series that mirrored the Batman animated series, as well as Batman: Beyond, Justice League, Justice League: Unlimited and Batman: The New Animated Series.
It may inspire once more, as it was announced this morning, during a recent press release, that J.J. Abrams, Bruce Timm and Matt Reeves will be producing a new animated series centered around the Dark Knight.
The executive producers — Timm, Reeves and Abrams — addressed their enthusiasm for working on the project.
“We are beyond excited to be working together to bring this character back, to tell engrossing new stories in Gotham City,” said the producers. “The series will be thrilling, cinematic and evocative of Batman’s noir roots, while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters. We cannot wait to share this new world.”
Tom Ascheim, the President of Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics (GKYAC), Warner Bros. Animation (WBA) and Cartoon Network Studios (CNS), had this to say during the announcement: “It is always fun to feed the insatiable appetite fans have for all things Batman. Batman: Caped Crusader will entertain first time and die-hard fans alike and, with such an impressive creative team in place, we know we have another future Batman classic in the making,”
Register added, “Batman: The Animated Series was a masterpiece that shaped the perception of the character for an entire generation of fans. It is in that spirit that we are bringing together three master storytellers in J.J., Matt and Bruce – each with their own intuitive understanding and affection for the character – to create a new series that will continue in the same groundbreaking legacy.”
Batman: Caped Crusader will be produced by Warner Bros. Animation (WBA), Bad Robot Productions and 6th & Idaho. It will be a fully re-imagined take on the character, bringing the intense action, nuanced characters and frightening themes to the home display. Expect to see the straight-to-order series on HBO Max and Cartoon Network in the near future.
