Alfred Molina Spoils Key Component of Spider-Man: No Way Home | His Recent Interview with Variety

Alfred Molina Confirms that his role in Spider-Man: No Way Home will be a continuation of Doc Ock from Spider-Man 2 (2004)

Spider-Man 2 — a fan-favorite superhero film that takes on the struggling conflicts of Peter Parker and his villainous counterpart, Doctor Octopus — is the first time Alfred Molina played the role of Doc Ock, but it wasn’t his last.  In December of 2020, it was leaked that Alfred Molina will play an undisclosed role in the newest installment of Jon Watt’s Spider-Man trilogy, Spider-Man: No Way Home.

While many people theorized that he is reprising his role as Doctor Octopus — the same way Jamie Fox is coming back to play Electro — many others were worried that he would come back as a cameo the same way Evan Peters appeared in WandaVision.

In a recent interview with Variety, where he discussed the behind-the-scenes drama of his newest film, “Promising Young Woman,” he described the secrecy of Tom Holland’s recent Spider-Man film.  “When we were shooting it, we were all under orders not to talk about it because it was supposed to be some great big secret,” later adding with a chuckle, “But, you know, it’s all over the internet. I actually described myself as the worst kept secret in Hollywood!”

After leaking that he is indeed returning to play the titular antagonist, he talked with Variety about coming back to replay his role as the 6-armed menace. “It was wonderful,” he said. “It was very interesting going back after 17 years to play the same role, given that in the intervening years, I now have two chins, a wattle, crow’s feet and a slightly dodgy lower back.”

While this is wonderful news to many fans, his return has worried many others as it could diminish his already fulfilled story arc.  Molina talked to Jon Watts about such a problem in which he replied, “In this universe, no one really dies.”

Alfred Molina coming back proves that the next Spider-Man film will tinker with the other franchises relating to the Web-Slinger.  It also reinforces the leak of Jamie Foxx playing Electro in the movie, the same character he portrayed in Andrew Garfield’s series: The Amazing Spider-Man.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is set for a Christmastime release on December 17th, 2021.
