Spider-Man: No Way Home | What the Gift Bag means for the Final Installment of Jon Watt’s Spider-Man Trilogy

Spider-Man: No Way Home — the third and “final” installment of Jon Watt’s Spider-Man trilogy —  finally wrapped filming this week in Atlanta.  Marvel has been in a bit of a slump this past year, delaying Black Widow —  the Scarlett Johansen-led film — to sometime in 2021, and plenty of other movies getting kicked up to a year from their estimated release dates.  Although Disney+ has given Marvel the ability to distribute critically acclaimed shows like WandaVision or The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, it has been almost a year and a half since the last MCU film came out: Spider-Man: Far From HomeNo Way Home is slated to be the biggest MCU project of the year, and the fans are more than excited for its release.

The rumors spreading around about the casting of both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire reached their peak this week as a gift bag, given to each of the crewmembers, was posted on Twitter.  The gift bag, which was sent out in celebration of the ending of filming, consists of Spider-Man-themed goodies, such as water bottles, gift cards, coasters, etc.  The main attractions of this bag, however, blew fans away as it solidified the rumor of Andrew Garfield’s, and maybe Tobey Maguire’s, casting: The T-shirt and the card.

Both of them have hidden details that hint towards the connection of all three Spider-Men coming back in No Way Home.

First, the T-shirt includes a picture of an Amazing Spider-Man-inspired cosplay.  The Twitter user, Spider-Man: No Way Home News, spotted the detail first before the post was taken down.

Second, The font applied to the gift card was the same font used in the Sam Raimi trilogy.  Coincidence? I think not!

The gift bag incident blew the case wide open.  It heavily reinforced the idea that Andrew and Tobey would reprise their roles in No Way Home. However, the speculation that these two would make an appearance in the film has been rumored countless times before the gift bag was even posted.

Ever since the start of filming, Marvel was in talks with both Andrew and Tobey to reprise their roles. The biggest problem that the studios faced with the two actors are what they wanted out of the movie.  One of them wanted more money, and the other wanted more screen-time.  These were both huge problems that the studios had to turn down or accept solemnly. It is either confirmed or denied whether or not the two actors will be joining the film’s cast, but it is very safe to say that there is a strong chance of seeing the two web-slingers back on the big screen.

With the success of Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse, Sony and Marvel have been in talks to bring the multiverse to the big screen; the question that they kept asking themselves about the concept was how?  How will we integrate the Spider-Verse into the MCU?  How would we get all three Spider-Man actors back? How can we still make a movie that is satisfying to every single viewer?

How can we make a Spider-Verse movie work?

The answer: who knows?

Sony Confirms the Title of Spider-Man: No Way Home

Hobgoblin’s Debut?

Ned Leeds, the character portrayed by Jacob Batallon, is set to play a major role in the upcoming film, maybe he will take up his comic counterpart’s evil alias: the Hobgoblin.  The Hobgoblin is one of Spider-Man’s greatest foes.   First appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man #18 (1964),  the Hobgoblin is several different individuals who carry on the sinister and despicable alternate persona of the Green Goblin.  Ned Leeds was the third to take up the mask chronologically.  He was brainwashed by Rodrick Kingsly, the original Hobgoblin, and was later killed under the alias.  He was revived by the Jackal in the later portions of the comics, but I don’t believe that would happen on the big screen.

Although Ned doesn’t look very athletic in both Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, Jacob Batalon has been working on his new slim physique ever since the end of October, 2020.  It supports the idea that Ned will become the Hobgoblin, even if it will overload the movie with far too many plots and characters.  While the Multi-Verse theory is still being thrown around, Jacob Batalon as the Hobgoblin seems like something that will almost definitely happen in the film, but we still don’t know for sure how it will play out.  Jacob hasn’t been in the spotlight when it comes to theorization, but his Hobgoblin reveal is one of the more logical theories that could happen in the film, rather than all three Spider-Men uniting in the threequel.

Spider: No Way Home looks packed, and honestly, that isn’t a good thing.  From Spider-Man 3 to The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man films have been known to bomb when they introduce too many villains.  It’s almost become a tradition for the last film in the franchise to fail the hardest.  Will Spider-Man: No Way Home be the same?  Will its past predecessors be its ultimate downfall?  Spider-Man: No Way Home could be a masterpiece, or the most disappointing film of 2021, guess we’ll have to wait and see.
