Zack Snyder and the rest of the advertising team for Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021) unveiled 6 separate promos for their latest film; each one pertains to a certain hero, or heroine, with footage of their role in the movie. Zack Snyder’s Justice League is an alternate take on the same film in 2017, but with a whole new vision. The movie will have a runtime of approximately 4 hours and will be split into 6 consecutive chapters. It will release on March 18th, 2021, on HBO Max. The characters will all be revamped to meet Zack’s vision for a dark and grim movie that will explore the deep psychology of all 6 members of the League.
In the short yet impactful trailers for Justice League, we have seen references to other comics and how exactly the movie will play out for each character. From the Bat-Tank in the Dark Knight Returns story-line to the Black Suit that Superman will don in the film, here is everything we have seen and what they all could mean for Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021).
Batman got his promo on March 3rd of 2021. In this trailer, he broods on top of a gargoyle as several voices are ringing through his head. “Your guilts have become your reason” and “Hate is useless” are the two quotes that somewhat represent Bruce’s journey throughout these films. The camera pans out to a huge bat-tank that takes up almost ⅘’s of the screen. If you didn’t know, it is the Batmobile from the Dark Knight Returns comic written by Frank Miller in 1986. It is a monolith of a vehicle, almost a fortress of mass destruction, that he will use in his quest for liberation against Darkseid. Speaking of Darkseid, there are plenty more characters whose voices you can hear in the mix coming from both Darkseid and Martian Manhunter. Darkseid speaks in a very monotone and threatening voice stating, “I will come for my great prize.” This is hinting at the Anti-Life Equation. The Anti-Life Equation is a mathematical formula that proves all sentient life hopeless and that freedom is a concept that will never be achieved. Darkseid plans to control all human life and to take away that free will; very similar to Lucifer’s plan during biblical times.
Ray Porter — a well-regarded actor who portrayed several characters such as Mark Meltzer from Bioshock 2 (2010), and First A.D from Argo (2012) — will voice Darkseid in the Snyder-Cut. He is not as well-known as most of the actors in this film, but his portrayal as Darkseid sounds spot-on. Martian Manhunter also speaks in this clip; although we still don’t have any first looks or new footage showcasing him, we still have this one line from the Man Hunter himself. He declares in a hopeful message, “I have a stake in this world, and it’s about time I start fighting for it.” Harry Lennix is portraying Martian Manhunter in the latest film, whose most known role comes from the Matrix trilogy. He also played the general that J’onn is disguised as in the Man of Steel (2012) and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016). Martian Manhunter was first revealed by Zack Snyder in his flurry of social media posts a couple of years ago; it was quite phenomenal to understand why the character appeared in so many of Zack’s films in the DCEU.
The last scene is a clip of Batman being helped up by Superman, who is wearing the black suit, as they look out to the horizon with the rest of the league. This shot is almost indistinguishable from the one we saw in Joss Whedon’s version of the film, yet it has a much darker tone, rather than the vibrant palettes of orange used in the 2016 film. Ending on March 10th, this is the first out of six trailers that advertised Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021). The next trailer reveals insight as to where and when Superman acquired the black suit.
“They wanted me back for a reason.” Superman’s promo unveils Clark donning his newest suit: the black suit. Its black and silver design takes heavy inspiration from the Reign of Supermen graphic novel. In the novel, Superman dies at the hands of Doomsday — a weapon of destruction with only one goal in mind: to kill the last son of Krypton. Superman comes back from the dead at the ending of the novel in a flashy 80s mullet and a sleek new suit design that we now see in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. The promo parallels the flight scene from Man of Steel where he concentrates all of his strength to cultivate a large amount of power to achieve flight. He kneels on the ground as stones begin to float around him; he finally shoots up into the sky, breaking the sound barrier. Darkseid states, “His world will join the others” in the promo along with Jor-El declaring to Kal, “You will accomplish wonders.” Each promo has a pattern to it, with each one showing the character performing some sort of action as several voices are heard throughout the video.
Superman is supposedly being rebooted with the hopes of a black actor to portray him, most likely based on the character of Val-Zod. Val-Zod is the son of General Zod and the Superman of Earth 2 — think of him as the Miles Morales of the DC Universe. Many fans were in outrage on account of this news as many hoped for a Man of Steel sequel. Warner Brothers may change their decision but we don’t have any solid confirmation on that matter.
“You can’t turn your back on the world forever.” Jason Mamoa is one of the most likable actors in Hollywood, and Aquaman is no different. His bad-ass mannerism and just how relatable he is brewed a massive fandom. In the promo, He is looking over a dead sea-king, pondering over his responsibilities as the rightful ruler of Atlantis. His character is all about proving self-worth. He doesn’t believe he deserves the throne of Atlantis, but what he doesn’t realize is that it’s not his choice, in the end, it’s the peoples’. To meet the goal of being the rightful king of Atlantis, Aquaman must rise above his responsibilities and learn to do the right thing; it’s the least he can do.
The Scarlet Speedster’s promo gives us a little preshow of what’s to come from his time-traveling abilities. It’s been heavily hinted that Flash will play a major role in not just this movie, but the whole DCEU in general. His movie, Flashpoint, will come out soon after this movie’s release, a couple of years sooner, but his promo gives a lot more insight into his role as the scarlet speedster of the DC Entertainment Universe. In the promo, we see a more detailed look into the meeting of both Barry Allen and Iris West where Barry saves her from a rampaging automobile. Zack Snyder implied in one of his earlier interviews on the film that the Flash simply can’t take a person and carry them as he runs as it would quite simply shatter them, so instead, Barry will simply nudge certain things into place to meet with his specific position which seems like a cool little disadvantage to his powers. Barry slightly guides Iris to a safer area as he makes a quick superhero departure, well, before exchanging looks at one another. The promo doesn’t give any good information on the film but it does show the thriving and vibrant visuals of the movie; it is beautiful how well designed the speed-force is. The Flash will come out sometime next year of 2021 with certain key characteristics of the flashpoint storyline — Barry Allen goes back in time to save his mother and in return gets a present that leads to the extinction of the human race — that will kick off the DCEU the way it was meant to be kicked off: spectacularly.
Wonder Woman had her second movie in Christmas of 2020, titled Wonder Woman 1984. It was…not good, but this movie might redeem it. Wonder Woman is notified by the Amazons of Steppenwolf’s crusade for the Mother boxes. In despair and grief, she stares out into the horizon with an arrow in one hand as she broods on what could’ve happened if she was there to protect her sisters. Nonetheless, she is ready to assist the league in taking out Steppenwolf and confront the leader of Apokalypse: Darkseid, once and for all. Wonder Woman’s final shot, in the promo, is her clashing with a new updated look of Steppenwolf, very different than the design from 2017. Even though she is a part of the Big Three, Wonder Woman’s role in this movie hasn’t been confirmed or hinted at yet in any of the advertisements, she could be the most important or the most expendable part of the movie. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
“I’m not broken, and I’m not alone.” Cyborg is one of the only heroes in the League, so far, that doesn’t have much going for him in the future. His actor, Ray Fisher, stirred up some controversy during the release of Justice League (2017). Ray accused Joss Whedon of “abuse” and “unprofessionalism” during the filming of Justice League that later got him taken out of the Flash film that will be releasing sometime next year. A Vanity Fair article goes into much more depth over the social media battle that the the actor had to face in his career’s final moments. His promo deals with the pain and guilt that Cyborg must have endured after the loss of both of his parents as seen in the shot of him staring at a family that could’ve been. However, rather than pushing him down, he uses it to motivate himself and push forward. We don’t see much new footage that proves useful in determining the plot of the film except for one particular scene. Cyborg, in his imaginative state, is looking across this vast land of destruction, possibly Apokalypse; and I must say, It looks incredible. Cyborg is also known to appear in the Knightmare sequences as well, although we don’t know his exact role in those scenes.
The New Teaser | Darkseid
There was a new teaser of the Snyder-Cut that was being advertised on Twitch — the live-streaming platform — that included several different reveals and new looks at what’s to come from Zack Snyder’s magnum opus. We see a more defined look at Darkseid, one of the first shots of the Flash in the Knightmare sequence, and some reused shots that now serve greater purposes than they used to, like the final shot from the Man of Steel. The trailer is shown above.
