Warner Brothers have been continuing to film their latest installment in the Batman franchise titled, “The Batman” starring Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano, and Colin Farrell. The Batman is the next big feature of the year and is nearing production wrap. Matt Reeves has announced earlier that the filming for the movie will wrap somewhere in March—when is still not confirmed. After releasing a teaser trailer for the film at the DC Fandome event on August 22nd, it has been hyped for months on end to be the next big DC film. However, the production of the film has been paused mostly due to Covid-19—the killer of every film—with the lead actor, Robert Pattinson, getting infected in the middle of filming; Putting it at a halt for a good two or three weeks. To say the least, the production has been thrown around for the past year, but it is finally coming to a close.

The movie will be a gritty, noir take on the character introducing villains barely seen on the big screen as Riddler and Penguin take center stage in the rogues’ gallery. The movie has great potential to be one of the best superhero movies to come out in the past decade, and the hype building for it might be well deserved. The red and black aesthetic that engulfs the film shows how dark they are aiming to produce it. The movie will take inspiration from the novels, Batman: The Long Halloween, and Batman: Year One with a hint of Dark Victory. Each of these books are well renowned and gloomy while constructing realistic takes on the characters of the DC Universe.

The Batman, he’s in this picture I think

The Bat-suit and Bat-mobile both took several months to construct so it can pertain to Matt Reeves’s vision of the character. The tactical layout with a bat logo hatched to the chest plate looks to be made out of gun components (one of the ongoing theories of the movie) is truly stunning and very noir-like. The Bat-mobile takes inspiration from a roughed up muscle car in jet black with bulletproof plates surrounding it giving off the homemade aesthetic of the character. While it is very controversial, I personally love this take on the vehicle. It’s about time we steered away from the sports car version of the vehicle while also not steering too far into tank territory. It’s a muscle car, nothing else to it.

The advertising campaign of the movie has released a new poster for the film taking inspiration from the infamous Batman: Year one novel. The poster shows the Caped Crusader hiding from a light source of some kind to reveal flyers showing the anarchy consuming Gotham. The heading of the poster reads, “He’s out to clean up a city that likes being dirty, he can’t do it alone.” Could this be hinting at a possible Robin portrayal being introduced in the movie? There has been some news spreading around of the teen actor, Jay Lycurgo (casted as Tim Drake in Titans Season 3) playing a big role in the Batman movie; could he have been mistaken to be the Robin of the Batman instead of Titans? We don’t know for sure but it’s nice to theorize on the idea.

The movie will spawn a new television series as well taking place in the same universe; presenting the Gotham PD in a high budget show with Jefferey Wright to star as Commissioner Gordon (the same character he will portray in the movie). The show will debate the rough issues surrounding the Gotham Police Department and how corruption has truly plagued the department, but Gordon is ready to change that. The series will release on HBO Max somewhere in the near future.

To say the least, this new universe could either be a masterclass piece of cinema or a mediocre standpoint in the DC series of bland movies, but I have a feeling it will take the first route. The Batman will be part of the collection of movies that will release in theatres and on HBO max simultaneously, along with the movies: Godzilla vs. Kong, Mortal Kombat, Dune, Matrix 4, etc. It has been recommended to watch this movie in the theatres for the full effect of a milestone in cinema such as this one.
